The Rongai Route Northern Circuit approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, climbing via Rongai Gate and looping around the northern slopes before reaching Kibo. This route is less crowded, scenic, and ideal for trekkers who want a gradual ascent and maximum summit success.

Gentle trek through forest to Simba Camp. Peaceful, low-traffic trail.
Overnight: Simba Camp
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Moorland
Steady ascent with panoramic views over the plains and Mawenzi.
Overnight: Second Cave Camp
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Moorland
Continue through open moorland and scenic ridge to Kikelelwa Camp.
Overnight: Kikelelwa Cam
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine Moorland
Steep, rewarding climb to Mawenzi Tarn beneath the jagged Mawenzi peaks.

Cross the Saddle, a vast desert valley between Mawenzi and Kibo, and reach Kibo Hut.
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours | Habitat: Arctic → Alpine Desert
Midnight start for summit. Climb to Stella Point and continue to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Barafu Camp for rest.

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert → Moorland
Descend to Horombo Hut through Karanga Valley, passing scenic moorland and small ridges.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Rainforest / Moorland
Continue descending through the southern slopes, entering rainforest. Reach Mweka Camp or Mandara Hut depending on pace.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest
Final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect summit certificates and transfer to Moshi.
