The Northern Circuit is the longest and least crowded route on Kilimanjaro, approaching from the west and looping around the northern slopes. It offers spectacular panoramic views of Kibo, Mawenzi, and the Kenyan plains, while providing excellent acclimatization through gradual altitude gain.
Start: Londorossi Gate
End: Mweka Gate
Highest Point: Uhuru Peak (5,895m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest
Gentle trek through dense rainforest. Short first day allows initial acclimatization.
Overnight: Big Tree Camp
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Moorland
Ascend gradually into open moorland and reach Shira 1 Camp.
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours | Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Desert
Cross the plateau with panoramic views of Kibo and Mawenzi.
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Trek along the northern slopes, gaining altitude gradually to Moir Hut.
Overnight: Moir Hut

Descend slightly across the northern slopes to Buffalo Camp. The day is easier, aiding acclimatization.

Continue ascending along the northern ridge, gradually approaching Kibo.
Overnight: Third Cave Camp

Final climb to Barafu Camp, base for the midnight summit push.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours | Habitat: Arctic → Rainforest
Start summit attempt around midnight. Reach Stella Point and continue to Uhuru Peak. Descend via Barafu and the rainforest to Mweka Camp.
Highlights:
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest
Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect summit certificates and transfer back to Moshi.
