The 7-day Machame Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and successful summit routes. The additional day for acclimatization greatly increases summit success rates and makes the trek safer and more comfortable. Trekkers pass through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone.

Begin your trek through a lush rainforest with moss, ferns, and colobus monkeys. The trail is
steep and humid but beautiful.
Overnight: Machame Camp.

Exit the forest into moorland. Hike up ridges toward the Shira Plateau with stunning views of Kibo Peak.

A major acclimatization day. Ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend into the
Barranco Valley with dramatic cliffs and giant senecios.
Overnight: Barranco Camp.

Climb the iconic Barranco Wall—fun scrambling with breathtaking views over the valley.
Traverse ridges and descend into Karanga Valley before a final ascent to camp.

Steep climb through alpine desert. Arrive at Barafu Camp early to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Views of Mawenzi and Kibo are impressive.

Start the summit push around midnight. Reach Stella Point at sunrise and continue to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point.
After photos and celebrations, descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.

Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hrs
Descend through dense montane forest to Mweka Gate where you will receive your summit certificates. Transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower and rest.
