About this tour

The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and popular trekking routes. It offers diverse landscapes, including lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and stunning glaciers near the summit. This 6-day version requires good physical fitness, as acclimatization time is shorter than the 7-day option.

    Distance: 11 km | Hiking Time: 5–7 hrs
  • Trek through dense rainforest with lush vegetation and wildlife. Trail is steep but manageable.
    Overnight:Machame Camp

  • Elevation:2,850m to 3,840m
    Distance: 5 km | Hiking Time: 4–6 hrs
  • Ascent through moorland zone onto the Shira Plateau. Stunning views of Kibo and Mt. Meru.
    Overnight:Shira Camp

  • Elevation:3,840m to 4,630m to 3,976m
    Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 6–8 hrs
  • Important acclimatization day climbing to Lava Tower (4,630m). Descend into Barranco Valley with impressive giant groundsels.
    Overnight:Barranco Camp

    Distance: 8–10 km | Hiking Time: 8–10 hrs
  • Climb the magnificent Barranco Wallin the morning. Instead of stopping at Karanga, continue directly toward Barafu Camp.
    This is a long, challenging day involving steep ascents and high altitude. The trail crosses rocky ridges and alpine desert terrain with panoramic views of the summit.
    Arrive at Barafu in the afternoon, rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
    Overnight: Barafu Camp

  • Elevation:4,640m to 5,895m (Uhuru) → down to 3,100m
    Distance: 17 km | Hiking Time: 10–15 hrs
  • Begin the summit push at midnight to reach Stella Pointat sunrise and then Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
    Descend to Barafu for a short break, then continue to Mweka Camp.
    Overnight: Mweka Camp

  • Elevation:3,100m to 1,640m
    Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 3–4 hrs
  • Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate where certificates are issued. Meet the vehicle for transfer back to Moshi.
